The whole of human evolution involves community building, from the discovery of fire to optical wires. A community is formed when a set of individuals come together with a common ground of thought, need, belief, creativity etc. If we retrospect and simplify all the movements, civilizations or even religions, they all started with a small set of people working towards or rather, agreeing upon a similar platform or idea to be specific.

The word community was derived from the Old French comuneté, which comes from the Latin communitas "community", "public spirit" (from Latin communis- "shared in common").

The literal meaning of the word community can be described as a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic or a strong belief  in common. Nonetheless it could also refer to people who do not live in the same place or locality but have a common ground of acceptance on basis of ideas, projects or work goals. A community is a social unit with commonalities such as norms, religion, values, customs, or identity, but what forms a community is the concept of a mutual idea between two or more individuals and hence we can also state that people who have a common idea or skillset work on similar projects and companies and form a community in a co-working environment metamorphically.

Communities may share a sense of place situated in a given geographical area (e.g. a country, village, town, or neighborhood) or in virtual space through communication platforms.

There are four elements of community:

  • Membership, feeling of belongingness.

  • Influence

  • Reinforcement

  • And emotional connect.

According to Scott Peck, there are four building steps of a community:

  • Pseudocommunity: It is for the first time people sharing the common ground of thought or needs or creativity come together and deal with the adaptability of sharing and acknowledging the difference in their common grounds.

  • Chaos: People come out with their ideas breaking the shadow of indifference.

  • Emptiness: When people finally moves beyond the chaos of indifference and accept the diversity by embracing empathy.

  • True community: Rooted respect for amongst the community members  and deep listening.

The key aspect of community formation is the communication of common ground, respecting indifferences and yet working towards the same goal with different methods.

Most of the religions are the individual set of individuals speaking the same language of belief and customs which was very different from what their parent religion spoke. This lead to a lot of religious movements and community formation, the most modern example are the Arya Samaj and Apolistic  Church.

Going down to the pages of the history of the art movement, one of the most iconic community was formed back in 1920, called Avant-garde, which is now an art form. The whole idea of this art movement was started by a set of individuals sharing common art idea which believed breaking the orthodox and establishing the radical with respect to art, culture and society, which would push the boundaries of what is acceptable as the norm or the status quo, primarily in the cultural realm.

Today’s era is the age of digital platform, the key idea of the modern community is fast communication and solution, something which is just ono tap away. Various social media podiums are outcome of a community, for example LinkedIn, where people sharing the common professional goals reach out to each other, twitter where people of same thought process comes together and same goes with Facebook and Instagram which comprises of various community pages for example pages for voicing out the common thought, business platform, events etc. Like previously mentioned, it justifies how a community is formed on basis of a simple idea or a similar goal and platform for various individuals coming from different cultural backgrounds, working for the same purpose. One of the most iconic examples of such community is an anti-bullying community on various social media platform where there’s an exchange of information between strangers, especially among teenagers, discussing their personal experiences, the outrage and the solution to it.

Community building is a powerful tool of communication we have had in past and even today, it comes to us organically hence community is a sense of expressing common individuality and bring in the revolution in the social and cultural realms. It should be used carefully as the impact of it changes the course of the era be it negative or positive and can also lead to large cultural formations or deformations in the society depending on individuals agreement upon various agenda’s in today’s era.
